THE ARTWORK
In the 1960s, the counterculture movement saw hippies rebel against the mainstream, rejecting conventional values and traditional ways of life. Alongside experimentation with drugs, many sought enlightenment, adventure and a taste of the exotic.
Down by the River taps into that spirit of rebellion, exploring emotion, memory and imagination beyond the rules of traditional art. Inner and outer worlds collide through bold colours, thick paint and loose brushstrokes. Hidden symbolism runs throughout the painting, with some meanings kept private for those curious enough to look a little closer.
“He let the dark side come through a little too bright.”
— Neil Young
A bull-man hangs from a tree. Is he a mystic, a myth, a madman or just born that way? Is he choosing to hang, or was he hung? Is his swinging ceremonial or just for fun? His spotted flesh raises more questions. Are they sacred symbols or mystical eyes? Is he marked, branded or perhaps plagued by some mysterious disease?
And what about the sun? Is it a he, a she, a they or just the sun? The alchemist's ultimate symbol, encompassing all matter and an omnipotent force of life? Or simply a perverted voyeur, a blinding yellow jerk-off playing sadistic mind games with the intention of burning everything to the ground?
The bare blue dame, stark naked and wrapped in the colour of the sky, traces the mouth of a cave. One red-hot nipple, blazing red hair and crimson lips. Her eye wide open, head thrown back, transfixed by the swinging bull. Is she some spectral essence or a primal mother, a Sophia figure offering beauty but ready to snatch it away? Does she give life or bring death? Perhaps she's a goddess, or just a mischievous nymph looking for a little pleasure?
And what lurks inside the dark cave? A hooting owl? A ghostly hunger stirring in the shadows? Or perhaps just another figment of the mind's imagination?
