MEMENTO MORI ORIGINAL ARTWORK
ORIGINAL MIXED MEDIA MODULAR ARTWORK
A multitude of skulls float in darkness, painted in shades of bone and ash. Crimson-red snakes hiss and slither between teeth and eye sockets. A visceral meditation on the fundamental human experience: life and death.
Created as a series of eight individual pieces designed to fit together as one larger composition, Memento Mori can be collected in different configurations.
Choose the Skull Set, the Skull & Snake Set, or collect both to bring the complete composition together. Each set can be displayed independently, while the complete collection reveals the full artwork.

THE ARTWORK
Memento Mori means “remember death”. It's an ancient idea, humans have spent much of their existence trying to forget. Different cultures, different beliefs, but the same unavoidable subject: we're all going to die.
Socrates believed that philosophy was, in many ways, practice for death. In Plato's Phaedo, he describes philosophy as being concerned with dying and being dead.
In early Buddhist teachings, Maraṇasati means “mindfulness of death”. Some Sufis became known as the “people of the graves”, regularly visiting cemeteries to contemplate their own mortality.
The ancient Egyptians had their own way of keeping death in mind. During feasts and celebrations, they reportedly brought out a skeleton to remind everyone what lay ahead. The message was simple enough: drink, be merry and enjoy yourself while you still have a pulse.
Different times, different traditions, same inevitable reality. We're all just passing through, so make a little noise, enjoy the absurdity and don't forget to dance while you've still got legs.
As Alan Watts put it:
“Without birth and death, and without the perpetual transmutation of all the forms of life, the world would be static, rhythm-less, undancing, mummified.”
CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY
