THE ARTWORK
Both lonely windows bear the impressions of a human finger’s friction ridges. A culprit, perhaps? The fingerprints evoke the scene of a crime, forming a handmade border that ties the two paintings together.
With a sad, old, bristleless paintbrush, the rational mind is put to sleep as raw impulse is laid bare. The hand is free to act with the bold danger and radical freedom of a troubled cowboy.
A scruffy, legless man hovers above his favourite snakeskin boots. His deep blue poncho consumes the desolate, burnt-orange and ochre landscape from head to toe. Wearing a wide-brimmed cowboy hat adorned with a small kookaburra feather and a string of stingray teeth, the ramblin’ man raises a sharpened knife in one hand, creating an ominous tension, while gripping the snake’s neck with the other. Their eyes lock and bulge from their heads.
The snake’s body is covered in blotchy scales, built up with generous daubs of paint. As it retches, its pointed teeth are exposed and its forked tongue flickers towards the man’s bulging eyes.
Is the skeleton upside-down in the boot yard, or on a vision quest? Has he been in the sun too long, raised a ruckus and woken the snakes? Or is he six feet under in the bone orchard? Perhaps he was a bunko artist who got bushwhacked — or maybe it was our dear ol’ ramblin’ man who lost his grip on the snake and became buzzard bait.
Whatever the story, if he were above snakes… he’d surely tell us to shut our big bazoo.
