THE ARTWORK
As the stars move across the sky each night people of the world have looked up and wondered about their place in the universe. In uncertain times, people frequently turn to the sky for guidance. In addition, the stars have a peculiar pull on the human form in an artistic tradition known as “Homo Signorum” or “The Zodiac Man” (or Woman) wherein zodiac signs are shown next to or atop the bodily parts they were believed to affect. The zodiac man is not to a specific religion or culture and appears in many throughout antiquity where we find similar images in manuscripts from various continents including Europe, Asia, Persia, and the Americas.
In Europe, images of the zodiac man formed part of a larger medieval constellation of knowledge. In medieval times the human body was seen as a microcosm of the heavens ‘As above, so below’ and our health was influenced by the motion of celestial spheres.
This notion is also found in Babylonian, Egyptian, Chinese, Vedic, Mayan, and Aztec cosmologies.
