JAUK BLANKET

£395.00

JAUK 100% ORGANIC COTTON WOVEN BLANKET LIMITED EDITION OF 100

From Balinese mythology comes the Jauk, a playful but sinister demon.

FURTHER READING

The Jauk dance is a classical solo performance that expresses the movements of a demon. There are two Jauk brothers known to the dance, one softer and one more coarse. The dancer must show their expressions through gestures alone. Passed down from generation to generation, it is considered a very high-art to execute.

A high tasseled-crown covers a rich mass of tangled-hair and framed by a thick, black moustache is a frozen smile. White gloved hands extend into transparent ngernails and itter incessantly to the music; as the hypnotic eyes of the masked Jauk hold a penetrating glare, they produce an uncanny quality of being from another world.

When the Balinese perform masked dances they do not merely ‘act’ and try to represent a character but rather through Taksu (the spirit, innate charisma and skill of the dancer) the entire energy of the mythological character is embodied and as the whole being transforms, an invisible force is made visible and reveals to the audience a deeper more subtle dimension of existence.
