In the heart of Bali's Ubud, the tropical breeze carries the whispers of tradition through dense jungles, a modest workshop upholds an age-old craft: natural indigo dyeing.

Set in a natural plantation Tarum has created an intricate process based on five distinct plants to create a spectrum of natural colors. Umbrella tree leaves yield a rich black hue, mango leaves contribute a vibrant yellow, mahogany leaves produce a warm brown, Indigofera leaves provide the iconic blue or indigo shade, and Sappan Wood imparts a deep red. Through the artful combination of these plant extracts, an array of diverse colors emerges.

Unlike conventional dyeing methods, this entirely natural process demands time and patience. It involves the meticulous steps of harvesting, drying, and boiling the leaves for an extensive 7 to 8 hours to extract the vivid colors.

In this eco-conscious practice, only leaves are selectively harvested, allowing the trees to thrive and contribute to a fully sustainable cycle. The leftover leaf waste is ingeniously repurposed as compost, creating a harmonious and circular system that nurtures the environment.

We have partnered with Tarum on a series of Natural Tye dye garments. Available exclusively in our store.
