RUBEDO / CITRINITAS TENCEL SCARF

Abstract scene; naively painted in a punchy colour palette of electric blue, acid yellow and striking crimson.

FURTHER READING

The Alchemical sun sits on a throne, made of bones and mushrooms sprout from his toes. The Blue One is grasping at the moon and reaching with a red right hand toward the mountain, whilst its three eyes gaze at us. The hanged man (a symbol of the tarot) dangles upside-down from a crooked tree and is silhouetted by the yellow clouds that are dotted by milky-stars of the cosmos.

The Great Work (magnum opus) is an alchemical term for the process of working with the prima materia to create the philosopher’s stone. It has been used to describe personal and spiritual transmutation in the Hermetic tradition, attached to laboratory processes, chemical colour changes, and used as a model for the individuation process and a device in art and literature.

The four stages of the prima materia are: Nigredo, the blackening or melanosis. Albedo, the whitening or leucosis. Citrinitas, the yellowing or xanthosis and Rubedo, the reddening, purpling, or iosis.

Especially with followers of Jungian psychology the four alchemical steps are viewed as analogous to the process of attaining individuation and transcendence, and finally, the emergence out of an undifferentiated unconscious. Rubedo represents the self archetype, and is the culmination of the four stages, the merging of ego and self.
