‘Rangda’ is extremely powerful and very important in the Balinese healing traditions. The embodiment of a dark female force ‘gone wild’, her appearance is a little crazed and scary but she is a necessary evil as she controls all chaos and maintains the equilibrium between light and dark forces. She is also known to hold protective qualities, for example her mask is visited in temples by students who request her blessing in order to successfully pass their exams.
