TOPENG WHITE LINEN SHORT SLEEVE SHIRT LIMITED EDITION of 100
Inspired by the masks worn in the highly-spirited and technical art of the Balinese Topeng Dance; this study is drawn in a simple line and depicts the characters; Tua (the old man), Barong and Rangda.
FEATURES
The sacred masks of Bali hold a symbolic force and power. They are deeply respected and connect the wearer to spirit. They give the artist the ability to temporarily transform and become inhabited by the nature and energy that’s held within the mask. Used in storytelling and ritual the mask offers protection, wisdom and healing.
When the Balinese are moved to create a sacred mask, the sculptor goes to a scared tree that grows within a temple and carefully selects a piece of wood, they honour the tree for its gift and believe the spirit lays within the mask and guides the process of its creation. When the mask is complete the whole village has a ceremony to show the mask to the tree, and offer their gratitude for the gift and art it has helped to create.
Masks hold a commanding presence and appear to resonate with a mysterious quality, a magic and a power. Whether a mask is worn or stationary they are without a doubt… something to focus ones attention upon.
