A ‘hypnic jerk’ is a sudden, involuntary muscle contraction that may be experienced when falling asleep.
Hypnic is short for hypnagogic, a word that describes the transition between wakefulness to sleep, which is when these jerks occur. In addition to the jerking movement, it’s common to experience other sensations or mental imagery along with the hypnic jerk, such as a dream or hallucination.
Using the very intimate medium of pencil drawing, this artwork is both intricately detailed and immersive. The drawing is layered, heavily worked and reworked and shows evidence of the artists compulsive and automatic approach...a hypnic ‘jerk’ indeed!
The realms of consciousness are split to reveal a dreamscape in which we see floating figures and
faces, beasts and vegetation that intertwine with purple mountains. An amuletic web of souls, spirits and otherworldly beings perform in the play of life, death and rebirth. The frightening parts of the cycle are blended into the story naturally in a scene that is both everything and nothing all at once. It speaks to the fact that nothing vanishes, everything transforms.
