THE ARTWORK
Housed within the bones is a labyrinthine structure with lighting and towers and elements from man and nature that all act in a kind of morphic resonance and fill the inside of the cavernous cranium. Painted after The French surrealist painter André Masson.
In a small study conducted within the surrealist movement during its early days, artists were asked to list the creatures of Greek mythology that interested them the most, they all cited the Minotaur. This mythological creature represented the instinctual forces that the surrealists sought to release in the hope of breaking the dominance of reason and releasing often unconscious hopes and desires.
The labyrinth is a structure with psychoanalytical undertones as it can symbolise the diving into the unconscious – which just as the fabled Greek myth of Theseus and the minotaur portrayed, is often a dangerous and sometimes fatal path that man has to take in order to attain wisdom and liberation.
