THE GREAT HE-GOAT BACK PRINT T-SHIRT

£120.00

THE GREAT HE-GOAT BLACK HEAVYWEIGHT COTTON T-SHIRT with BACK PRINT LIMITED EDITION of 100

Painted in gold and bronze hues, a giant beast stares forth. Crooked rows of teeth make for a demonic grin, as its nostrils flare and its wild eyes burn in the night sky.

FURTHER READING

Satan hulks, in the form of a goat, in silhouette against a storm brewed sky. The figure looms over a coven of witches and necromancers as some kind of dark ritual is underway.

Dressed in clerical clothing the great beast holds court before a circle of figures. With a goat-like beard and horns, heavy body, and wide grin, he stands in a gray and barren landscape.

The three witches to the right of the image stand over a smoking caldron; reminstant of Shakespeare’s “weird sisters” they all have similar twisted features; scowling, nervous and obsequious. Adorned with a skull mask, the cloaked figure to the left appears as some form of necromancer holding a flaming pentagram. Below him kneels a grisled woman. She holds out an infant to the looming figure.

The Devil seems to be acting as a sort of priest at an initiation ceremony for the child. The sub-humanity of the gathered group is underlined by their bestial features and moronic stares.

The use of tone and chiaroscuro to create atmosphere is reminiscent of Velázquez, Caravaggio and Francisco Goya and the theme of the devil and witchcraft play with and reference Goya’s painting ‘The Witches Sabbath’.

Goya incorporated depictions of witch covens in several of his artworks as a means of protest. His paintings can be read as a critique of those who supported and enforced the principles of the Spanish Inquisition during the era of seventeenth-century witch hunts.

In observing Goya’s paintings, one can perceive his contempt for the prevailing inclination towards superstition and the church’s promotion of medieval anxieties during that period. His portrayals of these scenes served as a mockery of what he deemed as irrational fears manipulated by the established religious hierarchy for their own political advantage. knowledge.
