A dog-faced monkey cowers under a branch, and an orange bird of paradise spreads its wings wide. In the foreground, the remains of a skeleton lie picked clean and baked dry by the sun. The bones are white, stark against the colours of life.
Painted in shades of green and burnt umber, the scene has that naive, art brut edge of Henri Rousseau.
The jungle is alive in all its colourful glory, but it carries a warning: man is not special, not above nature. The cat, the monkey, the bird, even the plants—they all know this truth. The skeleton could be interpreted as silent testament to our place in the world. We are part of it, subject to its whims, not its masters.
