THE ARTWORK

Memento Mori is an ancient tradition of contemplating mortality, it shows up throughout human history and dates back to ancient Egypt.

Socrates claimed that philosophy is about “Nothing other than dying and being dead”.

Early Buddhist texts frequently use the word “Maraṇasati” which translates to “remember death”.

Some Sufis earned the moniker “people of the graves” as they were known to frequent cemeteries to reflect on mortality and death.

The ancient Egyptian also had a tradition where a skeleton would be brought out for celebrations while everyone cheered. “Drink and be merry for when you’re dead you will look like this.”

“Without birth and death, and without the perpetual transmutation of all the forms of life, the world would be static, rhythm-less, undancing, mummified.” ―Alan watts
