THE ARTWORK

In this version, the myth of the minotaur is reinterpreted. Under the gaze of the sun and the stars, the beast is finally set free as he pensively emerges out from his labyrinthine cave into the world. Ariadne remains in the shadows of the cave, reaching out like a jilted lover. In the minotaur's hand, a severed red thread dangles in the breeze.

In Jungian psychology, Ariadne’s thread represents using logic to solve a problem which has multiple apparent ways to proceed, such as a physical maze, a logic puzzle, or an ethical dilemma, through an exhaustive application of logic to all available routes.

For Carl Jung, the Minotaur symbolises our deepest fears and desires lurking in the shadowy labyrinth of our unconscious. The creature also represents our complex nature as individuals, a mixture of animalistic desires. Perhaps this image represents a symbol of the unconscious mind; once unearthed, it can be set free.
