THE ARTWORK

Outside, a crescent moon in the night sky, nestled between mountains with voluptuous curves like a woman’s form. The bust is set on a windowsill, taking the spotlight, framed by David Lynch’s red velvet curtains. Beside it, a candle burns and a lone rose sits.

The rose, once a symbol of beauty and pleasure, now fading—a reminder of life’s short ride and the looming death. Candles, their fate tied to time—the more they burn, the less they become until nothing’s left. Etched into the wall below is a defiant line from Homer “No one can hurry me down to Hades before my time”

The Sun and Moon play major roles in alchemy, emblematic of prized metals: the Sun, a gilded representation of gold, and the Moon, a silver manifestation. They also embody sulphur and mercury, often portrayed as a bound couple in marital unity or as the revered Mother and Father of the Philosophers’ Stone. Masculinity is the Sun’s essence, and the Moon embodies the feminine principle.

For Carl Jung, a cornerstone concept was the ‘Coniunctio’ — the melding of opposing forces within the psyche. These internal adversaries sow inner strife yet propel individuation.

The Coniunctio is a fusion of those elements in life that confound us, presenting a paradox. It demands a confrontation with mystery, a challenge beyond the reach of even the most rigorous rational thought. Instead, it calls for profound creativity. Jung recognised this truth, acknowledging that such creativity relies on symbols that both nourish and arise from the imagination.

From Jung’s perspective, the ‘Coniunctio’ wasn’t a mere footnote in the alchemical narrative; it took centre stage. He saw it as an archetype of psychic operation, symbolising intricate patterns of relationships in the grand alchemy of the mind.
