THE ARTWORK

The story of Buddhist prince Sutasoma is an old Javanese kakawin poem. The tale unfolds as Prince Sutasoma quietly leaves the palace. He seeks solitude and meditation on Mount Meru. In the foothills, he comes across a cemetery. There, he pays homage to Durga, the goddess of the Temple. Durga gives him ritual incantations, granting him the power to dispel all harmful forces.

Deep in the woods, Prince Sutasoma encounters three untamed creatures. A giant with an elephant head, a serpent, and a tigress on the verge of devouring her cubs. Sutasoma offers himself as a meal to the tigress. She devours him instead of her cubs. Through this act of compassion, Sutasoma is revived by the god Batara Indra.

With wisdom and compassion, he tames the three creatures, turning them into disciples. He teaches them the path to purity and emptiness. He emphasises goodwill to all beings and advocates for non-violence, even in the face of death.

Following Buddhist principles, the integration of wisdom and compassion is essential for true insight. In contemporary drama, Prince Sutasoma is revered for his wisdom, goodwill, and profound compassion. His character serves as an inspiration, embodying virtues that resonate deeply down the ages.
