THE ARTWORK

These colourful woodblock prints are known as Ukiyo-e , which literally means “Pictures of the Floating World”.

Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese Art and style of woodblock print and painting that depicts kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; and erotica.

Woodblock printing is a technique for printing text, images or patterns, used widely throughout East Asia in antiquity as a method of printing on textiles and paper. Each image is created by carving a wooden block to leave only some
areas and lines at the original level; it is these lines that are inked and shown in the print in a relief printing process.

Tigers, or tora in Japan, also symbolise protection against evil spirits and bad energies. They are depicted as “noble subjects” and regarded as a protective creature, who roars like thunder and can ward away demons and spirits.
