THE ARTWORK
On the left, Poseidon stands by the ocean, his trident held upright, a symbol of his dominion over the seas. The swirling blues of the water behind him evoke the raw power and unpredictability of the waves. He wears a crown of seaweed and gold, his robe adorned with dolphins—a nod to his realm and the life within it. His gaze is firm, his stance commanding, as if ready to assert his claim.
On the right, Athena is depicted in full battle regalia, embodying both wisdom and strength. Her golden helmet glints against the pale blue sky, and her armour, intricately designed, reflects her role as the goddess of strategic warfare. In her hand, she holds a spear, steady and purposeful, while the shield by her side bears the terrifying visage of the Gorgon Medusa, a reminder of Athena’s might and her protection over those who revere her. Behind her, jagged peaks rise, evoking her steadfast wisdom and connection to the land.
This piece alludes to the famous myth of Athena and Poseidon competing to become the patron deity of Athens. According to legend, the two gods sought to win the favour of the city’s people by offering gifts. Poseidon struck the ground with his trident, creating a spring of seawater—a testament to his power over the seas but ultimately of little use to the people. Athena, in contrast, planted the first olive tree, symbolising peace, prosperity, and sustenance. Her gift was deemed the greater, and she became the patron goddess of Athens, with the olive tree forever symbolising the city’s resilience and wisdom.
Through its striking imagery and vibrant colours, this lithograph captures not just the gods’ rivalry but their distinct personalities and realms. Poseidon, wild and unyielding, embodies the forces of nature, while Athena’s calm yet determined demeanour reflects intellect, strategy, and a deep connection to civilisation. Together, they stand as enduring symbols of ancient Greek mythology, their myth intertwined with the foundations of Athens itself.
