THE ARTWORK

In one hand, she holds a lit candle, its flame glowing with a sense of quiet power. Behind her rise two intertwined trees—one red and one pale—forming a twisting arch that connects earth to sky. This is the axis mundi, the cosmic axis, the point where heaven, earth, and the underworld meet. It is the bridge between the human and the divine, a timeless symbol found in myths and spiritual traditions across cultures.

Above the trees, the sun and moon are nestled in their respective branches, personified as celestial beings. The golden sun, radiant and intense, symbolises vitality, enlightenment, and the active force of creation. Opposite it, the darkened crescent moon with its melancholic face represents introspection, mystery, and the passive, receptive qualities of existence. Together, they embody the duality that governs all things: light and shadow, masculine and feminine, life and death.

The landscape behind the figure is stark and dreamlike, echoing the serene yet unsettling qualities of Surrealism. The barren shore and distant waters beneath a starry night sky evoke a sense of timeless isolation. The stillness of the scene recalls René Magritte’s ability to blend the familiar with the uncanny, creating a world that feels both tangible and imagined. The intertwining trees, with their strange, organic forms, suggest a connection to the subconscious—a visual metaphor for the unseen threads that bind all aspects of existence together.

“Axis Mundi” plays with archetypes and cosmic symbols to explore the nature of balance and unity. The trees reflect life’s intertwined forces, as opposites coalesce into a single form. The figure at the centre becomes a guide, standing calmly at the threshold of opposing realms.
