CAMPUHAN BLANKET

£395.00

CAMPUHAN WOVEN 100% ORGANIC COTTON BLANKET LIMITED EDITION of 100

Campuhan in Balinese means the meeting of two rivers, sacred to the Balinese as centres of energy. The Campuhan river valley was originally a place of meditation. The river junction marks Ubud’s beginnings.

FURTHER READING

In the eighth century, wandering sage Rsi Markendya was drawn here, establishing Pura Gunung Lebah

temple and the town of Ubud. The Campuhan area teems with plants used as medicine. The village is now called Ubud, from Ubad, meaning medicine.

Painted in natural tones of orange, green, and grey, the jungle scene is detailed. From the river valley to the sky, the rolling hills, and the distant volcano Mount Agung.

Temples and houses nestle in the valley. In the foreground, bathers wash in the river. Villagers present offerings and go about their daily rituals. Overlooking the scene, a large terrifying figure—a giant ogre or “raksasa”grins, claws raised high.

Mythological tales from the area’s oral history tell of a giant who lived in a cave, preying on people walking through the river valley to the temple. The valley still holds a magical power and presence in the face of the recent influx of tourism developments.
