The god Zeus disguises himself as a swan and seduces/rapes(?) the mortal woman Leda. Leda falls pregnant and the child born soon becomes Helen of Troy whose beauty is said to have started the cataclysmic - Trojan war.
Leda and the Swan is one of the most enduring themes in art history and has seen many accounts and adaptations by artists and poets… from Renaissance Italy with paintings by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo (among others) to the famous poem by William Butler Yeats, a foremost figure in 20th Century Literature; and finally worth a mention for a bold version of this old art-historical theme, is the 1962 work by abstract expressionist Cy Twombly, with his brilliantly energetic interpretation.
The myth of Leda and the Swan is one of art history’s most familiar archetypes of metamorphosis, rebirth and evolution.
