IN THE PINES BLANKET

£395.00

IN THE PINES WOVEN COTTON BLANKET LIMITED EDITION of 100

In a bronze hue, gleaming like Tom Cruise’s aviators, this Lynchian scene captures a macabre moment frozen in time, resembling a haunted still from a movie.

FURTHER READING

A serene female figure, clad in red, strolls through the forest, clutching a man’s severed head. His lifeless body slumps against a tree, hand outstretched. An owl, a symbol of the supernatural, peers from his hollow.

The title, coming from the traditional Appalachian folk song “In the Pines,” evokes a haunting melody dating back to at least the 1870s. Blues singer Lead Belly and Nirvana are among the many artists who’ve recorded versions of this enigmatic ballad. With over 160 renditions, the song’s true meaning and authorship are lost to time. Amidst its complex history, the meaning of “In the Pines” remains elusive, a vast spectrum of interpretations.

Though the song’s core elements endure across versions, its context shifts with a tweak of lyrics. Whether it’s a husband, wife, or parent whose head is discovered while their body remains elusive, the narrative is shrouded in ambiguity. Men, women, and sometimes both flee into the sordid pines, where they can serve as a metaphor for everything from desire to despair and the inevitability of death.
