THE ARTWORK

They sway gently in the evening breeze, their delicate forms rooted in a vibrant green thicket. Yet in the water below, stark and silent, rests a skull—a reminder of life’s impermanence. Its hollow sockets stare upwards, as though contemplating the flowers above—the contrast between vitality and decay laid bare.

The iris, a symbol of hope, valour, and the ephemeral nature of life, blooms in sharp contrast to the skull—a universal emblem of mortality. Together, they form a poignant memento mori, echoing the transient nature of all things. Inspired by the serene precision of Japanese woodcuts and the evocative imagery of Ohara Koson (Kanazawa 1877 – Tokyo 1945), this artwork invites reflection. The stillness of death and the fleeting beauty of life coexist here, balanced delicately on the edge of eternity.
