His mama was a gambler and moonshiner. Papa? A rolling stone. He was an outside child.
He grew into an outlaw, searching the desert for the hidden man blues. Life drifted in slow motion, but it was motion all the same. Always running—deserts, back roads, dead-end towns—chasing shadows. No one left to care, nothing left to lose.
Somewhere on the road, maybe from the poison, maybe the succubus, he snapped. At first, it came in bursts until it became the only thing he knew—or the only thing he could remember.
It ended just after midnight at the Scorpion’s Nest. Psycho or not, he had a certain charm, and that’s how he wound up with Cherry.
Cherry was a hooker with a tongue as sharp as his whip, and her lips clung like a goddamn religion to a burning fag. Her ash became his ocean, and her laugh cut deep, her poison deeper. She was the last thing he had.
The sun melted into night, and the melting pot reached its crescendo as he let out his final ‘yahoo’. His face turned blue, and he was gone.
