At the heart of this world is the Subak system: an ancient Balinese method of cooperative water management developed in the 9th century. More than just irrigation, Subak is a spiritual and ecological choreography—an intricate network of canals, weirs, tunnels, terraced paddies, and water temples that govern both the flow of water and the social fabric of the community.
