Among them, strange faces emerge: a rabbit, a child in a skull mask, even a nod to Captain Beefheart’s surreal Trout Mask—a carnival of the uncanny surrounding the sacrificial blaze. Painted in a style reminiscent of Francisco Goya’s dark period—where the grotesque and the sublime blur—this work conjures a world teetering on the edge of nightmare and ritual.
This work draws on the ancient and contested legend of the wicker man, a towering figure said to have been used by Celtic druids for ritual sacrifice—humans and animals consumed in fire as offerings to the gods. The only classical account of this practice comes from Julius Caesar in Commentaries on the Gallic War, where he describes the grim rite with chilling detachment. Yet modern historians question the accuracy of these Roman reports, recognising a tendency among conquerors to depict the “other” as savage and barbaric.
Though its historical truth remains uncertain, the image of the wicker man has taken on a life of its own, especially since the haunting 1973 British folk-horror film of the same name. Today, its symbolism resonates far beyond its origin: a fusion of myth, misinterpretation, and modern ritual. In this painting, the burning effigy becomes a stage for transformation—a surreal ritual where ancient fears, pop surrealism, and contemporary folklore converge in smoke and shadow.
