Owls swoop from an indigo sky as the devil conducts an initiation ceremony for a child. Goya’s paintings may satirise priestcraft, with witches representing priests exploiting superstition and fear.
In the Middle Ages, superstition held that the devil preyed on children. Christian authorities exploited this fear, stoking hysteria about witchcraft. By instilling fear of the occult, they bolstered faith in the Church and scapegoated pagan beliefs.
True imagery of Satan emerged in the Middle Ages. The Bible never describes the fallen angel’s physical form, but the half-man, half-goat image likely stemmed from the Greek god Pan.
Pan, with his beard and pug nose, once symbolised nature’s wildness and sexual prowess. As Christianity spread, Pan’s popularity waned, and he became synonymous with evil.
The Bible vilifies goats while exalting sheep. Combine this disdain for goats with rejection of sexuality and lingering paganism, and the image of Satan takes shape. Christian missionaries likely repurposed established images to fit their narrative. The revered guardian of nature, Pan, transformed into the Dark Angel.
Please note, we released around 50 pieces in the original 2022 release, followed by fewer than 20 in 2025. With only 5 pieces available in the current release, Witches Sabbath remains within its original limited-edition run of no more than 100 pieces.
