BUTOH WHITE RAYON SHORT SLEEVE SHIRT LIMITED EDITION of 100

Butoh, also known as the ‘Dance of utter Darkness’ was formed through a collaboration of its two key founders, Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno in Japan, 1959. It rose out of the ashes of post-World War II when the collective energy, uprising due to the economic and social challenges, became fertile soil for a new and expressive art form to emerge.

FURTHER READING

Butoh is alive, raw, and dangerous. It is an experience of hyper-presence and as the artist holds every tiny molecule of life within their radical grip, they seek to express that which cannot be explained in words. The dancer transforms themselves and enters into a realm of pure art, a mysterious, pulsing, visual poem fueled with existentialism and personal truth. Surrealist techniques are used to generate movements layered with emotions and sensations. Butoh represents a shift from the conscious to the subconscious, and each movement, even if it is choreographed, comes from within and must be authentic.

Also featured in the artwork is the brilliant pioneer of expressionist dance: Mary Wigman and the great actor and mime artist: Etienne Decroux.

“Since each and every one of us is born in and of this universe, we’re linked to every single thing in it. There’s nothing to stop us from reaching out and touching the entire universe”.

— Kazuo Ohno
