In alchemy the moon represents the feminine forces and the feminine principle of the cosmos, The sun represents the masculine. The archetypal mother rules the below, while the archetypal father, the sun, rules the above. Two different worlds coming from two opposite poles mingled during this time.
In our own soul or psyche, these two forces are mostly in a state of flux. The two poles are what Jung called, the anima and the animus (the masculine and feminine forces of the soul).
The aim of the alchemists was the transmutation of the soul; the ‘alchemical androgynous’ and the unification of a pair of opposites. The secret of the union is in an inner alchemical work that seeks to balance all aspects of the fundamental contrast of our being.
