RATNA CREPE SILK SCARF LIMITED EDITION of 50

Voluptuous crones romp through a midnight jungle. Large flowers protrude from the undergrowth and animals peep through the trees. Made in earth tones of grey and ochre and rendered in a naïve Post- Impressionist style, reminiscent of Henri Rousseau.

Ratna Manggali is the daughter of Calon Arang, a character in Javanese and Balinese folklore dating from the 12th century. Tradition calls her a witch, a master of black magic and the demon queen Rangda is said to be the incarnation of Calon Arang.

According to legend in the village of Girah in the Kediri Kingdom long ago, there lived a cruel widow named Calon Arang who had a beautiful daughter named Ratna Manggali, but even though she was very beautiful, the people of Girah were afraid to take her as a wife because of her ruthless mother, they said she was a witch who practiced black magic, so Ratna Manggali had no suitors.

Knowing this, Calon Arang became furious, she held all the people in the village responsible and put a curse on Girah. She went to the cemetery, performed a dark ceremony and sacrificed a child, soon the goddess Durga appeared and accepted the witch’s offering, fulfilling her wish. A flood engulfed the village and took many people’s lives. Afterward, many of the survivors became sick with an incurable plague and died. Nobody was spared.
