The Protea is amongst the oldest families of flowers on earth, dating back 300 million years. According to Greek legend, the flower derived its name from Proteus, the son of Poseidon. Proteus, a sea god known for his ability to possess knowledge of the past, present, and future, was a defiant figure who often chose to nap on Pharos Island rather than offer prophecies.

In order to deter those seeking his wisdom, Proteus would shapeshift at will. The Protea flower earned its name from him due to its remarkable capacity to present itself in an astonishing array of shapes, sizes, colours, and textures, boasting over 1,400 distinct varieties.

Given its mythological connection to transformation and change, the Protea flower carries symbolic representations of diversity and courage. The Protea’s association with courage stems from its ability to thrive in harsh and challenging environments.
